“My list of ingredients for success is divided into four basic groups: Inward, Outward, Upward and Onward.” -David Thomas

Scripture reading: Joshua 1:1-9

Success in every aspect of life especially in career and family is one of the major quests of people all across the globe. The educational system of almost every Nation is heavily inundated with courses which promote the potential success of their students. The shelves of many libraries are also packed with a myriad of self-help books on success. In these books, one finds certain characteristics such as diligence, hard work and time management which are often stated as common denominators for success in every field of endeavor but beyond these, there are many other ideas espoused by many authors towards the achievement of success in life. The dependence on the divine for success is usually not advocated in erudite discussions but therein is the secret formula of excellence for children of God.

In our scripture reading for today, a young intern received a mandate from God to complete one of the biggest projects delivered to the people of Israel. I believe that it was a daunting task for Joshua to successfully accomplish the work that God initially committed to his mentor, Moses. On three occasions, God introduced the topics of faith, strength and good courage as essential components for the execution of this assignment. These virtues are still critical for the fulfillment of destiny for every child of God. On a further note, God revealed the divine secret of not only success but good success and prosperity when He said, “this Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success” – Joshua 1:8. The God-ward part of success has already been established through the new creation realities of the believer but the man-ward part is dependent on the believer.

The divine formula for good success is simple; the child of God must study, meditate and confess the infallible word of God around the clock on a daily basis – not once in a while and during the day but also at night. The formula does not end with just the study of the word of God but continues with its practical application. The Apostle James received an insight into this revelation when he said in James 1:25“but he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does”. Those who only hear the word of God and don’t apply them in their day-to-day life are never blessed or experience good success. It is difficult to comprehend with the natural mind this secret success formula of God, but therein is the unfathomable wisdom of God revealed. It is evidently clear that good success and prosperity of many people on earth are not necessarily due to adherence to systematic man-made formulas. Several times, what the world describes as good fortune or ‘a break’ leads to indescribable success and prosperity of certain persons who were not necessarily the best of talents in their fields of endeavor. The preacher aptly stated that, “I returned and saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong, neither is bread to the wise nor riches to men of intelligence and understanding nor favor to men of skill; but time and chance happen to them all” – Eccl.9:11. That unknown, intangible and essential part of good success is the portion that is fully in the domain of God.

Stay richly blessed and be positioned for good success and prosperity by adhering strictly to the secret divine formula of studying, believing, confessing and applying God’s word on a consistent basis in every area of your life.

Memory verse:“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” – Joshua 1:8
